Interview with Jodie Minear

Recently we had a chance to sit down with IFBB Pro, fitness model and 1st Phorm athlete Jodie Minear for a little Q&A about herself, her sport, and what she’s going to be bringing to you on her blog here on the Phorm Factory …
Thanks for taking the time to sit down with us today, Jodie.

No problem at all.

Tell us a little bit about the sport you compete in?

I compete in figure as an IFBB Pro. I like that it’s feminine and muscular at the same time. For me, I like to have both … to be able to balance the fit look but still remain sexy.

What first drew you to start competing?

I love the idea of investing in your body and sharing with others who appreciate and do the same. What other way to do that than to compete?! Also … who doesn’t love to oil up?! Haha :)

No argument here, Jodie! When did you start training?

I started training when I was 18. Trust me when I say that I had no idea what I was really doing, but I was obsessed and nothing could keep me away after that first day.

Where do you train at?

I do most of my training at One 2 One here in Houston. Sometimes through out the week I’ll do cardio at some other gyms but the majority of my training is there for sure.

What’s your favorite exercise or muscle group to train?

I love training to get sore, which is not always a good thing but I like the feel. I get that sore feeling the most with legs and shoulders so those are my favorites.

What do you do outside of your sport?

I’m a personal trainer, so I do a lot of training, for myself and for my clients. In addition to training, I do diets and in-home spray tanning, too, so I stay pretty busy. Outside of my work and play in the gym, my other love is art; I have been painting since I was 5. I have done a couple museums and gallery shows in the past, but mostly I keep my work or gift it to others. This gives me an outlet to help me relax. Some weeks I’ll do 4 pictures and some weeks I’ll only do 1, it really just depends on how much rest I’m getting, because we all know we need that precious beauty sleep!

What can readers expect to learn from reading your blog?

I plan on covering a little bit of everything in my blog from diets to training to laughing and crying. I’m going to keep it fun and keep it real at the same time. I love to help people by sharing what I know and seeing if I can have a positive influence in some way. While I love to train for myself, my real passion is to inspire others to achieve their own fitness goals. Fitness and health is a way of life for me and I know that if others give it a chance (and give me a chance to show them how), they will love it, too. Diet and proper eating is a huge part of achieving any fitness goal and while it can be challenging, it can also be fun and along the way I will teach my readers all of my “magic” tricks and give them the recipes to all of my healthy treats! I’ll write about anything my readers want my help with

Give us one word describes you best?

Hungry! I know that sounds funny but that’s how I feel most of the time. I’m not talking about hungry for food either! In life we need to be hungry to work hard as well as to appreciate our blessings. I think keeping that drive close to you is very important, so you always remember where you come from.

Speaking of hungry … I know you have to diet a lot for competitions. We’re curious; what’s your favorite cheat food?

I’m not going to lie, I’m an equal-opportunity eater and I loooove all foods, but whatever it is, if you throw some sugar on it, it will look good to me! I can’t help my sweet tooth, and it never forgets. I’d love some donuts even though I think I’m going on 2 years since my last one.

What’s the biggest obstacle you've overcome in life?

My greatest obstacle in life was dealing with loss. When we lose a loved one, we have to come to terms with it before we can ever let go and grow from it. I do believe that God never gives you more than you can chew, it’s just sometimes different mouth-fulls take longer than others. Can you tell that dieting always gets me to relate stuff to food?! Haha. :)

We’ve noticed! Tell us about the happiest moment in your life?

My favorite moments in life are with my family and friends. Spending time with them and sharing the journey of life together is the most important thing to me.

What do you find to be the most attractive quality in other people?

There are so many wonderful qualities, but I love to laugh. My dream guy is Will Ferrell … Not only is he a sexy beast, he is also hilarious. Those curls in his hair seem timeless too.

What’s your favorite quote?

I’d have to go with: "Worrying is like a rocking chair, gives you something to do but gets you nowhere." If you’ll let me pick two, my other favorite one is "If you take life too seriously you will never get out alive." I think both of these are good and help keep things in perspective.

What motivates you?

I have a very competitive nature and I always try my hardest at everything I do. No regrets … Never Settle! I also love all of the relationships that I have built with people in the industry and find all of these people very motivating, each in their own way. I feel as though you should always set a good example, and to be able to inspire people to stay healthy and fit. You can’t go wrong with that!

What do you fear most?

I hate spiders, but mostly because I’m convinced that they love me. I have been bitten by 4 spiders - 2 brown recluse and the other 2 I’m not exactly sure what they were. My other fears are just periodic, day-to-day things. I always strive to be a better person than the day before. I think fear is really just a state of mind, so I keep my mind away from it and always set on positive.

Give us one little known fact about you … something no one would guess:

I love all animals, which isn’t weird … but I love rats. I have always wanted a pet rat. Listen first to why: Rats happen to be more loyal than dogs and are very intelligent. I know you might think I am crazy, but look into their eyes and tell me you don’t think they are cute. Ok, minus the tail. Now aren’t they cute?

Well, we might not all agree with you 100% on that last one there, Jodie, but thanks for taking the time to sit down with us!
