Interview with Kerri Hayes
Tell us a little bit about the sport you compete in?

I currently compete in the NPC – bikini division, and my journey so far has been absolutely amazing! I have learned so much about my body and proper nutrition, and I couldn’t be happier with the results I have achieved personally and competitively thus far. I don’t plan on stopping either; with every goal accomplished I like to set a new one for myself. There is always something new to learn in this sport and I enjoy passing on what I learn and know that works to others in order to help them achieve their goals.

What drew you to start competing in your sport?

I first became interested in competing after attending the Arnold Classic in 2009. The energy of expo and competitions made me realize that I too can take control of what is in my power to personally achieve, which is a fit & healthy body, and maximize it to its full potential. Anyone can tell you this is not an easy sport to compete in. The sacrifices and challenges that one encounters both mentally and physically along the way can be frustrating and even depressing at times. But by sticking to it and not giving up I found myself becoming a stronger more confident person both inside and out!

When did you start training?

I have been training for over 5 years now, but I have to admit I didn’t know much about using proper form in the gym until about a year ago.. The difference it has made on my body has been remarkable! I lift lighter weights, but because I have improved my form, my overall body symmetry has been so much better! It’s not how heavy you lift; it’s about how well you do. Mind to muscle.

Where do you train at?

I am blessed with an amazing trainer Greg Corriere, and his team at One to One in Houston, Texas. They make every client feel like family and all work together as a team to individually help each person accomplish their goals. They keep me motivated and inspired even on the toughest days during contest prep. I am so thankful for them!

What’s your favorite exercise or muscle group to train? Why?

My favorite has to be legs. Sexy lean legs are something I will even notice on a woman. And living in Texas, we can wear shorts about 9 months out of the year, so keeping them in toned and shapely is a must!

What do you do outside of your sport (job, other hobbies/activities)?

I work a full time job as a Finance Manager/ Image Consultant for a small business company. But when I am not working or training… my favorite hobby is to cook! I will be doing my cardio watching the food network channel and getting ideas from there and then taking them to the kitchen to create my own version of a dish which are low in sugar & fat, and high in protein! My inspiration led me to start my own business of creating meals customized to each client’s blood type and food preference with their weight goals in mind.

What can readers expect to learn from reading your blog?

A variety of things ranging from nutrition tips, new workouts and exercises I have learned. Recipes and ideas for new healthy meals and snacks. And my thoughts on the struggles and excitement of being a bikini competitor as well as ways that those aspiring to be a fitness model can prepare for competitions.

Give us one word describes you best? Why?

Optimistic! I try to always look on the bright side of things and people. And believe that good or bad everything happens for a reason! I feel that if you are positive you attract other positive people and things into your life!

Favorite cheat food?

Oooo.. French bread with a variety of European cheese and Italian red wine, finished with a rich dark chocolate ganache cake!

Biggest obstacle you've overcome in life?

Finding my place in this world and what my purpose in this life is. This is an ongoing process and every year I learn more about myself and get that much closer to finding my path in life.

What’s the most attractive quality in other people?

Their smile, as long as they have great personality and sense of humor behind it!

Favorite quote?

Every once in a while I will come across a quote that will move me and inspire me. This one is one that recently stood out to me : “ You were given this life because you were strong enough to live it” - Unknown

Tell us about the happiest moment in your life.

Gosh.. there are so many! Placing first in my class at the Ronnie Coleman Classic this year would have to definitely be one of them! My happiest would have to be when my whole big family (I have 11 brothers and sisters) was last together enjoying a delicious dinner my Mum prepared , everyone telling stories of childhood memories we shared and laughing in memory of days and times we spent together having fun.

What motivates you? Why?

Every day I find a new inspiration and new motivation. Sometimes it comes in the form of a really great song I hear, other times a quote I read. I get a lot of motivation from seeing those around me accomplishing their personal goals and it motivates me in turn to focus on the road ahead and not lose sight of my goals.

What do you fear most? Why?

I guess one of my fears would be that I will one day stop setting goals for myself and become stagnant and complacent with myself and my life. I always want to be striving for something better and finding ways to improve my life and the lives of those around me.

Give us one little known fact about you … something no one would guess:

Hummm… I have lived in and/or visited 17 countries around the world.
