Everyone knows what Vitamin C is, at least, they think they do. But did you know that you may not be getting as much Vitamin C as you think you are?

Collagen is also an important component in many kinds of connective tissue. These connective tissues are helpful during the wound healing process. Therefore, without the proper amount of Vitamin C, it’s possible that your wounds will not heal as quickly.
Free radicals are different kinds of particles which cause something called oxidative stress in the body. Think of oxidative stress as a process that damages your body’s cells over time.
Vitamin C can act as an antioxidant. This means it can combat these free radicals and reverse the negative effects of oxidative stress over time. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables that contain Vitamin C is one of the best ways to combat free radicals and oxidative stress. If you can’t get those foods for whatever reason, try a Vitamin C supplement instead.
This is Vitamin C’s most well-known role, but it’s also its most misunderstood role too. We already mentioned how Vitamin C helps heal wounds and fight oxidative stress caused by free radicals. But Vitamin C is also responsible for improving your body’s immunity. That being said, Vitamin C doesn’t improve immunity in the way most people think.
Studies suggest that Vitamin C doesn’t do as much to shorten the length of your cold if you only start taking it when you start noticing symptoms. The only exceptions are people who are under a large amount of physical stress or are constantly exposed to cold weather. So unless you’re working outside this winter or a marathon runner, it’s more beneficial to use Vitamin C consistently during cold and flu season instead of just when you feel sick.
That’s because studies show that Vitamin C can shorten the length of colds and other diseases when it’s taken ahead of time. So don’t just treat Vitamin C like medicine to take when you’re sick. Instead, treat your Vitamin C intake as a preventative measure. Prepare your body for when it will eventually get sick. The biggest problem with Vitamin C is that, whether you take it in a supplement form or eat foods with Vitamin C in them, your body has a hard time absorbing it. The average man needs at least 90 milligrams of Vitamin C every day whereas women need about 75 milligrams. That’s the equivalent to a cup of orange juice or grapefruit juice every day.
That doesn’t sound very hard. But it’s trickier when you consider how your body doesn’t absorb most of the Vitamin C that’s in your juice. Most of it will be excreted next time you go to the bathroom.
You could make the argument that all you need is a second or third cup of juice. But while your body will not absorb all of that Vitamin C, it will absorb all of the sugar. That can be hard on your waistline if not accounted for in your macros for the day.
Also, my rule of thumb for my clients is to try to drink as few calories as possible unless it is their Post-Workout Shake or a protein shake. So how do you get around this and give your body a better chance of absorbing Vitamin C?
